Which plants are appropriate for planting in koi pond?

Planting suitable aquatic plants in the koi fishpond can not only enhance the environment but also effectively improve the water quality and provide a healthier living space for the koi. Here are some recommended aquatic plant species, categorized into floating plants, floating-leaf plants, submerged plants, and marginal plants:

1. Floating plants:

Water lilies: With beautiful flowers and broad leaves, they not only look appealing but also offer shade and inhibit the growth of algae.

Lotus: While large varieties demand larger waters, the smaller ones are perfect for koi fishponds and are eye-catching during the blooming season.

2. Floating-leaf plants:

Water hyacinth: It grows rapidly and effectively covers the water surface to prevent algae outbreaks, but needs regular trimming to avoid excessive spread.

Duckweed: Small and dense, it can effectively absorb excess nutrients and is a natural water purifier.

3. Submerged plants:

Vallisneria: With developed roots, it effectively absorbs harmful substances in water and provides shelter for small fish.

Cabomba: Slender and soft, it can form green jungles underwater and increase the oxygen content of the water.

4. Marginal plants:

Iris: Planted on the edge of the pool, its roots help stabilize the soil and prevent erosion.

Calamus: With marginal ribbon-like leaves, it also helps consolidate the soil and beautify the pool shoreline.

When selecting plants, the specific conditions of the fishpond should be taken into account, such as the degree of sunlight, water hardness and other factors, as well as the growth rate of the plants, in order to maintain the ecological balance of the fishpond. In addition, timely pruning of plants is necessary to avoid their excessive growth affecting water quality or obstructing the activity space of the koi.

Through the reasonable plant configuration, your koi fishpond will not only be a paradise for fish but also turn into a vigorous water garden, adding a unique natural charm to your living environment.
